Akron Art Museum Embarks on Major Renovation of Historic 1899 Building
Big changes are coming to one of downtown Akron’s architectural gems. The Akron Art Museum has launched a $13 million “Create the Future” capital campaign to renovate its 1899 building—the original post office on the corner of Market and High. The project will preserve the historic charm of the structure while reimagining the interior to better serve today’s audiences.
Plans include new gallery space designed for interactive, immersive experiences, as well as a dedicated classroom to support school visits and hands-on learning. A standout addition will be the J.M. Smucker “Idea Machine”—a multigenerational creative studio meant to spark collaboration, creativity, and play.
The renovation will also bring long-needed updates to the building’s accessibility, infrastructure, and technology. The museum will stay open throughout construction, ensuring that exhibitions and programs continue without interruption.
This ambitious project reflects the museum’s commitment to being a more welcoming, engaging space for all. With the goal of doubling annual attendance, the Akron Art Museum is building not just for today, but for the creative community of tomorrow.
